Arriving in Joshua Tree

Spring has finally arrived! And to reward ourselves for making it through a tough and seemingly never-ending winter, we needed a break. White sand and warm tropical waters were the first visions to come to mind, but we decided we wanted an alternative to Florida or the Caribbean. And so our finger kind of fell on the map of California.

Flying into Los Angeles to see friends for a few days, we wanted to explore as much of the area as we could. So after a few days in sunny LA, we headed out to Joshua Tree.

The high desert covered in wildflowers

What an incredible landscape!

To experience it best, we booked into an amazing little cabin out in the middle of the high desert.

What a wonderful oasis it was when we arrived! Impeccably styled interior, with lots of homesteader charm – including a record player stocked with classic LPs.

Room for everyone to spread out and enjoy their own little piece of the desert

What a surprise it was to see the desert in such a vivid state of bloom! Wildflowers exploded across the land in a rich palette of spring color. We even found plentiful patches of desert daisies. And of course the namesake Joshua trees dotted about in every direction. Quite a funny sight they are, with their twisty branches knarled out in all directions. They are actually not a tree or a cactus at all, but actually in the lily family!

Daisy exploring the desert

We loved Joshua Tree National Park and were quite overwhelmed by how much of it there was to see. Far too much for us to see everything in a couple of days, but we hit the highlights – scrambling over the boulders, exploring its caves, and marveling at the lovely challa cactus garden.

There was so much to see and experience in this beguiling landscape.

But by far the best bit was enjoying some quality moments together as a family!

Home Beach Home

It’s been quite a journey, getting to South Carolina from London, over the past few months. But we finally found the perfect beach shack and we’re all snuggled in! I guess you could say I’ve even become a bit of a homebody.

I’ve been getting down to work in the kitchen, testing out some classic Southern recipes… and a few of my own, like this Georgia peach gâteau.

Southern life is treating us well. We’ve found the perfect compromise living 15 minutes outside of Charleston, but right on the beach in Sullivan’s Island. After all, we haven’t moved from the greatest city in the world to be downtown with all the tourists, college students and fixie bike hipsters. Life’s better on the water!

Luckily, we’re 2 blocks from the sand – so we’ve been taking advantage of morning walks on the beach and late afternoon swims in the ocean.

We didn’t waste any time finding our favourite restaurants on the island. On this particular occasion, we were off to brunch just up the road. We’re lucky we can walk everywhere, exploring our new neighbourhood on foot.

Obstinate Daughter is relatively new to the island – like us! But it’s already been making waves in the area for it’s coastal Italian influences and local ingredients. We heard about it practically before we even got unpacked, and now we’re working on making ourselves regulars.

Their Blonde Bloody Mary is epic. And in case you’re wondering, that’s pickled okra speared on the garnish.

East London Silliness

My gal pal was in town and invited me out to East London for a party. I was keen to go, but not in one straight shot. I have to ease my way east – so I suggested we meet for a cocktail on the fringe of civilization – King’s Cross. Drink, Shop & Do is the perfect place for people with short attention spans, like me. Started by two hip London girls, this place combines a number of my favorite things – cocktails, shopping, and having a laugh with friends. They also host crafty activity events, where you can get creative making flower headbands, or vintage style corsages, or origami bouquets. The perfect atmosphere to get silly!

We jumped in a cab and headed further east. I’m always a little skeptical of anything happening so close to the financial district at nighttime, but sometimes you gotta take a gamble. I’m glad I did, because our next stop was a pleasant surprise.

Life on Old Street is a Japanese restaurant with an afterhours bar downstairs. It’s got that minimalist East Asian vibe, a pair of DJs, and a disco ball – which automatically upped its cool factor. Plus, the bar serves sake – so it didn’t take long for us to start having fun!

There’s always someplace new to discover in London – and this applies to anywhere in the world. You just need to get out there and take the gamble. Because, sometimes, it definitely pays off.
