Fleurie, Charlottesville

Spending one night in Charlottesville, Virginia didn’t leave us much time to explore – so we headed straight downtown to check out the bustling pedestrian mall and see the sights before dinner.

Charlottesville City Hall had installed a huge chalk wall for the public to celebrate the First Amendment of the US Constitution. We took a moment to exercise our freedom of speech – or freedom to doodle!

Then we hit the shops! I was so happy to come across Caspari’s American outpost (the other is in Paris). I used to shop their products at Partridge’s in London – and this was my first visit to their bricks and mortar store.

Where interior design inspiration abounds!

I had to stop and coo over these preppy dog accessories – and ponder the question ,“Exactly when will we ever get a puppy?”

As the shops shuttered up for the evening, we traipsed down to dinner at a little French bistro called Fleurie.

I’ve been mostly steering clear of sugar and gluten this summer, but when I’m out at a nice restaurant all rules fly out the window.

Not one to be put off by an imminent sugar crash, it was time for dessert…

Sea Containers

Mondrian has arrived in London!  A familiar name we all know and love. For me, the brand conjures memories of an epic stay in Miami celebrating Art Basel many, many moons ago. This one is decidedly more Southbank than South Beach, but sits proudly on the water, the mighty River Thames. Housed in part of the old Sea Containers building, the new hotel has an understated nautical theme, and vibrant river views from its new ground floor restaurant.

We went to check it out on a blazingly bright afternoon for lunch.

There’s quite a bit of seafood on the menu, which is no problem for me! We ordered a selection of starters, then shared a chicken and a sea bass.

The desserts were great, and they even let us order a crème brulee off menu.

The sun was setting as we finished lunch (damn you, winter days!), so we headed upstairs to the rooftop bar, Rumpus Room, for the view – and ended up staying a little bit longer than planned.

With unobstructed views across the pulsing heart of London’s business and financial district, the rooftop terrace is no doubt going to be a popular al fresco destination this spring and summer. Have fun, people!

The drinks were impressive (aka exceptionally strong) and before we knew it, we were all a bit sozzled.

The only thing I would say if you visit Rumpus Room (and you aren’t expensing it to the bank you work for) – check your itemized bill before paying. The service is attentive and pleasant, but they definitely added extra items to our check that we didn’t order. Other than that, go forth and enjoy!

Bo London

Today I met a fellow ex-pat (and chronically late) friend for lunch at Bo London. It sits just opposite Maddox club on Mill Street in Mayfair. Unfortunately, as I was being seated at our suede banquette table, her cabbie was dropping her off at another Mill Street near Tower Bridge! Nothing I could do but swill my glass of grüner veltliner while I waited.

Having gained notoriety for their infamous “sex on the beach” dish that looks like a used condom tossed into the sand, I thought I’d try a few of the more appetizing options from the lunch menu. I had plenty of time to ponder my choices while the other half of my party re-routed her journey, so by the time she breezed in I had already memorized my order.

The wild mushroom dumplings and the chilli crab fun gor were luscious little parcels of savoriness, but the “X-treme Chinese” we came for were the classic xiao long bao served with a lemongrass vinegar dipping sauce. Careful not to squeeze them too tightly with your chopsticks or risk bursting the soft pouch and loosing all the creamy pork soup inside!

I had to hurriedly scoot back to work, but a hearty golf clap to the staff who were easily able to accomodate our restricted and somewhat hectic timetable. The set lunch menu gets you 3 dim sum, 1 main and 1 dessert for the thrifty pricetag of £27. Get yourself to Bo London!
